East Portlemouth Private Slipway
Creating safe, reliable waterfront access with a bespoke slipway extension and Dura Composites
For the owners of this stunning waterfront property in East Portlemouth, the goal was simple.
Make it easier and safer to enjoy the water.
The existing slipway had reached the point where it was becoming difficult to use, particularly at lower tides. Access to the boathouse was limited, the surface was deteriorating and the structure no longer reflected the quality of the property itself.
Working closely with Dura Composites, MMS designed and installed a bespoke marine access solution that improved safety, increased usability and blended naturally into its coastal surroundings.

The Challenge
The original concrete slipway was believed to date back to the Second World War.
Over time it had been covered with granite setts, but unfortunately the mortar used wasn't suitable for the marine environment. As the mortar deteriorated, the setts gradually became loose and began breaking away from the concrete beneath.
The lower section of the slipway presented another challenge.
Access relied on exposed shoreline rock that had been cut away to create a narrow channel. While this allowed some access, the uneven rock surface meant larger boats could only reach the boathouse during favourable tidal conditions.
The owners wanted a long-term solution that would improve access without compromising the character of their waterfront setting.
A bespoke solution for a unique location
No two waterfront properties are the same.
Rather than trying to adapt an off the shelf product, MMS designed a solution specifically for the site and the way the property would be used.
A bespoke 316 stainless steel framework was anchored directly into the existing rock before extending the slipway onto the sandy beach below.
The extension was finished using Dura Composites Standard GRP Grating, creating a durable anti-slip surface that allows water, sand and light to pass naturally through the deck while helping protect the marine habitat beneath.
The existing granite sett surface was replaced with Dura Composites Solid Top decking in dark grey, creating a clean, low maintenance finish that blends naturally with the surrounding granite coastline.
"The best waterfront projects don't just improve access. They should look like they've always belonged there."
Glynn Melhuish, Managing Director
Why Dura Composites?
Choosing the right materials is just as important as getting the design right.
MMS has built a close working relationship with Dura Composites, specifying their products on suitable projects because they consistently deliver the performance required in demanding marine environments.
For this project, Dura's composite products offered several key benefits:
Excellent slip resistance in wet conditions
No risk of rot or corrosion
Long service life
Low maintenance
Open grating that allows water and light to pass through naturally
A premium finish suited to high-end waterfront properties
Combining Dura's proven composite products with MMS's marine construction expertise provided a solution built to perform for many years.
The Result
The difference goes far beyond replacing an ageing slipway.
The homeowners now have safe, reliable access to their boathouse throughout much more of the tidal cycle.
Launching a boat is easier.
Kayaks and paddleboards can be accessed more comfortably.
The slipway is safer underfoot, requires very little maintenance and complements the quality of the property rather than detracting from it.
It's a practical improvement that also enhances the overall enjoyment of living by the water.
